Missed lesson

Missed lessons: it is your responsibility to catch up with the work before the next lesson. This is in the school rules. It is also really important if you want to have all the work for tests. You will not get any sympathy or test concessions if you do not catch up as the resources are here !

Lesson notes
When you are watching winter sports on tv, focus on the forces and speeds - how are they changed ? Are they big or small ?
How are they improved ? No written work needed - just think!
 6 3 FebNo lesson - TET week
7 10 FebHow does the force which starts a movement change how far an object travels ?

Using googlesheets to process experiemental data - averaging and graphs.
Use your google sheet graph, copy into Paint, add a line of best fit. Email to me : karin.parker@eduouka.fi

12 16 MarHome learning workWeight, mass and gravity: paino, massa ja painovoima

After this lesson you should be able to:

  • explain the difference between mass and weight
  • give the correct units for mass and weight
  • identify where a body can feel weightless and why this happens
Lesson activity:

Start  with this tutorial video
These are the videos which you are asked to watch during the tutorial:

'Free fall': - an old one but a good one

How to wash your hands in space  - Chris Hadfield has done some fantastic little video clips from the International Space Station

When you have watched these videos, do this task to check your learning.
13 23 MarHome learning workBalance and centre of gravity

After this lesson you should be able to:

  • .explain what is meant by the term centre of gravity
  • be able to find the centre of gravity of an object

Lesson activity:

Start  with this The broom challenge.

Karin's lesson video

These are the clips which you are asked to watch during the tutorial:

Here is your homework. The deadline is just before the lesson next week. This task is due before 8.00 April 1st
14 30 MarHome learning workLet's start with a try out of Microsoft teams at 8.15; if you are used to starting at 9.00 then just join in when you can. I have added you all to Teams and if you are able to, please attend. I want to review the work and how things are going so far.

In the Teams meeting, I hope to go through some of the questions so far.
Here's a link to an interesting page about how the centre of gravity changes when we move.

There is no homework for this week - well, except for 'at some point in your life, visit Kestilä and see the monument that says it is the centre point of Finland'. There may also be one at Piippola.

15 6 AprilHome learning workAcceleration

After this lesson you should be able to:

  • understand the unit for acceleration
  • do simple calculations using the formula F = (change in velocity)/(time taken)

Lesson activity:

Lesson video to explain the content. Remember you can ask questions in Teams
Lesson task which should be completed for homework. Use your notebook for working out etc.
16 13 AprilHome learning workLet's start with a Teams call at 8.15.

In week 17 you will have a test. Sorry. Has to be done.
Here is a list of the topics covered and some information.
Here is a page of tips for studying for open note tests.  The 'study with a friend' suggestion still works - just do it virtually !

So in the lesson, you can ask questions about the physics you have studied and we can use it as a revision.
The homework will be to study for the test - there is no form to complete and evidence of your attendance of the lesson just comes from the Teams meeting.

Pressure and units

Lesson task which should be completed for homework. You can use an online unit convertor to help you.
The deadline is after May 20th.   You have TWO weeks in which to watch this video and do the task - feel free to ask me at any time about the work.
20 11 MayHome learning workCar crash documentary First watch this documentary (45 minutes, BBC, 2012). If, for whatever reason you think you might find it upsetting (it deals with fatal car crashes) then it is fine for you not to watch it - life is too short to be traumatised by your physics lessons.  The documentary is a bit slow but covers safety developments  and testing really well, and wil lead into the work we will do next week.

Task: Traffic laws and road safety in Finland.
Show me evidence you have completed this either in your notebook (as we are back in school next week- yay! , or send it to me in an email.
Recommended sources to use (these are in English):
Finnish Road Safety Council - Liikenneturva
Police
Road safety in Finland report (OECD)   alternative link here

Questions:

1. How many fatalities were there on Finnish roads in 2018 ?  (check the OECD report)
2. What things have been done to reduce the number of fatalities on the roads here ?
3. Which group of road users has not seen a decrease in fatalities ?
4. If an off road driver is found to have a breath alcohol level of 0.25 mg/l have they committed an offence ? (Liikeneturva)
5. When are elk collisions most likely to happen (times of day and year) ?
6. A little challenge for you: a mobile police camera flashes at a driver travelling at 62 km/h on Kasarmintie just 200 m from the school.  When the letter from Poliisi arrives, will there be a fine and how much ? (Police  - there should be an online fine calculator!)
