Missed lesson

Missed lessons: it is your responsibility to catch up with the work before the next lesson. This is in the school rules. It is also really important if you want to have all the work for tests. You will not get any sympathy or test concessions if you do not catch up as the resources are here !

Grade 9 Chemistry Home Learning Spring 2020

Week 20

Many of you haven't yet done last week's questionnaire. Please do it ASAP.
If you did it on Monday last week, please let me know, Google form didn't gather your name.

On Monday you have your Biology test during your Chemistry lesson. Good luck!

During the Wednesday's/Friday's lessons do research about paper manufacturing.
Here are your sources (you can always find some extra sources):

Write yourself notes about paper making.
Include a drawn sketch of the steps in the process.
Suitable length for the notes is about a page

Wednesday's group: You do this on Wednesday and show me the notes on next week's lesson (Wed 20.5.)
Friday's groups: You'll do this during the lesson time on Friday 15.5.

Week 19

On Monday we have a live chat.
Please, join our Teams meeting on Monday:  9B at 10.15 and 9A at 11.15

During the Wednesday's/Friday's lessons do some research about Terrafame commonly known as Talvivaara mining.

Take a look at the Terrafame website, this YLE article and other sources and information you might find about Terafame and Talvivaara mining.
Answer this questionnaire according to your sources. Deadline by the end of the week.

Week 18

Again we have a bit shorter week due to the First of May on Friday.
This means you only have tasks for the Monday's lesson.
Wednesday's group will also get the same benefit of losing a lesson as Friday's groups.

Watch this tutorial abut drugs Drugs video and answer the Learning check after it.

Week 17

Monday - test.

Wednesday and Friday lessons
There are two sections of work this week for you to complete.

Section One - Carbohydrates
Watch the Tutorial Video
In your notebook answer - what is the difference between a monosaccharide, disaccharide and a polysaccharide.

Section Two - Proteins and amino acids
Watch the tutorial video   my apologies for the poor sound quality.
In your notebook answer:
a) what additional element is contained in amino acids and proteins ?
b) what is a peptide bond ?
c)what was the first protein to be sequenced, and how has that helped human health ?

Week 16

We have our live revision lesson this week and the test next week.

Have your Teams open during the double Chemistry lesson time and I'll send you an invitation to your Teams / school email.
There is no Chemistry Team yet.
Wednesday 10.15-11.45
Friday 8.15-9.45
Friday 10.15-11.45

Test on Monday 20th of April like agreed earlier.

Revision PowerPoint Basics, Metals, Organic Chemistry
Homework: Revise to the test.

Week 15 lessons

Due to Easter we only have one lesson of Chemistry this week.
Please join our Teams call on Monday: 9A at 11.15 and 9B at 10.15

A list of topics to be covered in the test can be fond from here * List *

Wednesday April 1st 10.15-11.45  or
Friday April 3rd 8.15-9-.45  and 10.15-11-45

IMPORTANT:

This week the work is divided into three sections  - each of about 45 minutes study time, and it is your responsibility to complete all three sections by the end of Friday. The homework task is due Monday April 6th before the start of your Monday lesson.

In your lesson time, Anna is of course available on Wilma, email and Teams for you to clarfiy your understanding.

Before you start - there was a very good question - how is the test going to be done ?
Very good question. Your suggestions here please. We have ideas...........

Section one: fats (lipids)
Tutorial video - you do not have to memorise anything, just understand.
After the video, you should be able to answer:
1. What is the difference between a fat and oil ?
2. What is a triester ?
3. What is a transfat ?
Find out - are transfats banned in the EU ?

Section two:  solubility and soaps/detergents
Tutorial video - again, understand it.
After the video, you should be able to answer:
1. What do hydrophobic and hydrophilic mean ?
2. How does washing your hands with soap and water destroy the corona virus ?

Section three: simple sugars
Tutorial video
After the video, you should be able to answer:
1. What is a monosaccharide ?
2. Why do our bodies respond differently to glucose and fructose ?

Find out - is HFCS banned in the EU ?

Week 13 lessons

Double Lessons

Wednesday March 25th 10.15-11.45
Friday March 27th 8.15-9-.45  and 10.15-11-45

Esters

By the end of this lesson you should:

  • be able to identify esters by name and structural formulae
  • list examples of where esters are found in natural and manufactured products

Suggested approach to the lesson: watch the tutorial video. You can take notes if you wish but the main points for notes which will help you in the test, are on the powerpoint on naming esters.  You should, however, have a couple of examples of structural formulae such as being able to draw an ester like ethyl propanoate.  The two other videos give examples of uses of esters. The homework task is to make you think about technological developments and applications of chemistry.

Tutorial video on esters
Powerpoint on naming esters
Videos on uses of esters on artificial flavouring and Flavor Lab
Attendance confirmation form link - you must complete this by the end of the day.

Homework task -
1. Read this page on patenting isomers
2. click on this link and complete the form. The task is due in before your lesson on Monday.

9B and 9A Monday March 23rd.

Watch this first

Tutorial video on carbon chemistry families - this is a recap of the work done so far.  Watch the video and take some notes on it - you do not have to write everything as it is just going through work you have done before.

When you have finished this lesson, prove your attendance by clicking this link and completing the form.

Week 12

Dear students,

Your homework for this week's double lesson was to research about how the scientific challenges of recycling plastics are being addressed.

You needed to write the results of you research, in your own words, as one sided A4 paper (sources on the other side).

Now please answer the questionnaire according to your research.

After you have answered the questions send your research paper to Anna (anna.rehula(at)eduouka.fi).

Deadline for the questionnaire and sending the research results to Anna in on Monday 23.3. at 10.00

Link to the questions is here.
